Sacred Love Flow

The sacred love flow is a vision. It’s a calling. It’s a way of being in the world. It’s a lodestar. It’s also very biblical. In Scripture, we see that the vision of the sacred love fits very well with our mind, heart, and behaviour, filled with and led by the Holy Spirit, and marked by our love for others.

How are the relationships with other people in your life? What about your relationship with God…and even with yourself? Did it ever occur to you that you have a relationship with yourself? While I’ve never given it much thought, I spend more time with myself than with anyone, and it’s vital that I get along well with me. Remember, you are the one person you can never get away from.

We all know how agonizing it is to work day after day with someone we don’t get along with, but at least that person doesn’t come home with us at night. We can’t get away from ourselves, not even for one second; so it’s of the utmost importance that we have peace with ourselves.

Many of us fall prey to self-rejection because we feel that nobody really loves us or accepts us. We figure that if nobody else loves us, then why should we love ourselves? Because we think others don’t love us, we feel that we must not be worth loving. But that’s a LIE we’ve believed for way too long!

We should love ourselves—not in a selfish, self-centred way that produces a lifestyle of self-indulgence, but in a balanced, godly way that affirms God’s creation as essentially good and right. We may be flawed by unfortunate experiences we’ve gone through, but that doesn’t mean we’re worthless and good for nothing.

We must have the kind of love for ourselves that says, “I know God loves me, so I can love what God chooses to love. I don’t love everything I do, but I accept myself because God accepts me.” We must develop the kind of mature love that says, “I know I need to change, and I want to change. In fact, I believe God is changing me daily, but during this process, I will not reject what God accepts. I’ll accept myself as I am right now, knowing that I will not always remain this way.” Many times people who reject themselves do so because they can’t see themselves as good, proper or right. They fail to see themselves the way God sees them—as precious children He dearly loves.

As you begin to see yourself through God’s eyes—someone who’s loved and cherished you—your view of yourself will begin to change. You’ll begin to see yourself not as rejected, but as loved and accepted…unique and beautiful in His sight. In quest of that, I wanted to quote a nice story which I came across during my last trip to the United States that could incite some spiritual sense within the readers before getting into this section.

A woman of modest means and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband’s employer’s home. The boss was very wealthy, with an estate home and several cars that cost more than the average house. The woman was delighted to experience firsthand the life of the extremely wealthy. The boss entertained his guests both at home on his estate as well as out at exclusive dining establishments. On one occasion as they were about to enter an exclusive restaurant, the boss was walking slightly ahead of them. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. An awkward silence followed. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, a few cigarette butts and assorted litter. Quietly, the rich man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have of a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, the penny bothered her. Finally, she casually mentioned that her son once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been rare. A smile crept across the man’s face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. “Look at it.” He said. “Read what it says.” She read the words “United States of America.” “No, not that; read further.” “One cent?” “No, keep reading.” “In God we Trust?” “Yes!” “And?” “And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God’s way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!”

I had a waking dream of the sacred love flow. My experience has led me to a powerful vision of living life completely immersed in the love of God. I was standing on two rocks, straddling a flowing brook. I sensed God’s love flowing under me and around me. I could feel the energy. I started to shiver. The power was immense. It was completely different. As I contemplated the prospect of God’s love expanding, I was suddenly catapulted into the air by the surging fountain. I almost fell over, the sensation was so powerful.

Then, I laughed. I pictured myself as a little insignificant figure on my back being held up in air, helpless to do anything but flail my arms and legs. All I could see was water stretching out in every track beneath me, and a pale blue sky. I knew God was all around me, but I felt alone and empty. I realized that there was only one option for me to escape my present state. I had to dive beneath the surface.

I was afraid I would drown, but I intuitively grasped that my only hope was going forward. It was dive, and take chances, or remain on the surface, surrounded by God, but completely unsatisfied. I chose to trust. Instantly, I found myself underwater, swimming freely and looking at the beautiful fish and coral, lit up somehow by God’s light. I could breathe by some miraculous oxygen source. I was completely at peace, and full of joy. I want to live in the ocean of God’s love, and be filled and overflowing with it. I want others to experience this sacred love in their encounters with me. I want everything I do to be an expression of this love.

My God, I have no idea where I am going… nor do I really know myself… But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you… And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Finally, it is your inner motivation either external or internal to a person, that arouses enthusiasm and persistence to pursue a certain course of action. Motivation is primarily concerned with what energizes human behaviour, what directs or channels such behaviour, and how this behaviour is maintained or sustained. The basic building blocks of a generalized model of the motivation process are needs or expectations, behaviour, goals or performance, rewards, and some form of feedback. Oftentimes, those moments can have a significant impact on our faith and spiritual life, by shaking our faith, strengthening it or indicating the need for a change in focus.
